Open tops do not have a solid roof; instead they are covered with a removable, weatherproof tarpaulin that can be secured with ropes. The metal beam above the door can be opened to the right or left and can also be dismantled from the container. Lashing rings at the inside base of the container are used to secure and prevent shifting of cargo during movement. This type of container is suitable for over-height cargo and heavy machinery.

Some of the 20' flat racks have inserting boards on the rear end which can be removed from the corner posts in case the cargo length is longer than the inside length of the container. 40' flat racks do not have inserting boards. New units have collapsible corner posts. Lashing rings on the bottom side rails, corner posts and floor are available to enable cargo to be secure using straps or chains.
